Having the right insurance is essential for property owners, including private landlords, who want to undertake home improvement projects on their bricks and mortar this bank holiday weekend.

Extended periods of time off - like the forthcoming few days - often prompt homeowners to do a spot of DIY, and private landlords will be no different.

They could see it as an ideal opportunity to get some odd jobs done across their property portfolios.

However, AA Insurance suggests that the correct cover must be in place, before warning anyone set to undertake work that the days following a bank holiday are often prime time for insurance claims.

The finance firm's Simon Douglas said: "We always see an increase in claims for DIY disasters after bank holiday weekends. But less than half of home contents policyholders have an accidental damage extension, which means that many claims wouldn't be met."

It is advisable for private landlords with a large property portfolio to have a team of manual labourers to call upon for home improvement work.
