A north London private landlord is facing legal action after he was found renting out unsuitable flats in Edgware near Harrow.

The unnamed property professional, who has not been named, was cramming tenants into small living spaces and making them use showers as toilets, reports the Harrow Observer.

Other landlord responsibilities were not being met, but local residents have been assured that Harrow council is dealing with the matter.

Councillor Marilyn Ashton, responsible for planning at the authority, told newspaper that the council is responsible for ensuring people's basic rights are being met.

"The people made homeless from these raids are now in proper and modern accommodation, where they should have been in the first place,"Ms Ashton explained. "It is only a pity they first fell prey to those who put profit over human dignity."

Both the letting and private landlord industries are set to come under closer scrutiny in the coming months as the Association of Residential Letting Agents and the Communities and Local Government department roll out new legislation.
