Private landlords looking to boost the price and attractiveness of their properties may consider modernising homes by putting in new windows and doors - but this may be something of a "false economy".

That is the opinion of assistant editor of Homebuilding &Renovating magazine Melanie Griffiths, who said that restoring old sash windows and doors is a better option than replacing them.

Various companies specialise in this form of restoration work, she added, and it can be beneficial for a property to be renovated in this way.

"Not only do PVCu windows and doors compromise the look and therefore value of a period home, but also they are likely to need replacing long before timber windows and doors, as, once damaged, they cannot really be repaired,"Ms Griffiths explained.

Unbiased.co.uk, the financial advice website, recently reported that a quarter of the British population plans to make substantial improvements to their homes in 2009.
